I won´t share the results yet...
…but I do want to show you what I did to manage Coach Ripke´s task #4. The challenge was to send Bryan, the manager of a famous soccer player, ideas and prices to up the IGTV game of his client. I´ve never done this before but that doesn´t mean I´m not able to. I started by doing some research on Google and Instagram. The first thing I searched for was the current best male footballers worldwide. I´ve found a list of the top 100 on The Guardian.
I took the 10 best players and looked them up on Instagram. Here´s a current rating for their IGTV performance (07/02/2019).
As you can see. the IGTV game of the 10 most valuable footballers at the moment is at a low level or – in other words – non-existent. Only Mohamad Salah has uploaded a short video on IGTV talking about how to get in touch with real people while avoiding social media. The next thing I did was to look at other players whom I knew have a great Instagram game going on. I looked up several players and the only accounts with IGTV content uploaded were those of Jerome Boateng, Lukas Podolski, Loris Karius and Neymar. Does that mean IGTV isn´t relevant for soccer players and probably will never be?! I don´t think so. Here is why. There are a few famous athletes who are starting their IGTV game or are even already strong; and as far as I can tell, Lewis Hamilton, Odell Beckham Junior, Stephen Curry, Roger Federer or Robert Wickens have strong games going on. To find out more about IGTV in general, how it works, and its future prospects, I recommend you read these blog post at uscreen.tv and another one at medium.com. If you´re really interested, I also recommend you look at some statistics about Instagram. You can find them easily on the Internet.
Why am I doing all that? It´s not about copying someone else´s ideas or content. I did this to get inspired and to figure out what seems to work and what doesn´t. This research combined with personal experiences on Instagram and especially IGTV is the basis for my ideas and concept for Bryan and his client. All this has to be understood in a context where the player understands that he benefits from this effort, and that he needs to invest in content creation. The question is if he can extend his reach and engagement on social media and/or establish his name as a brand in order to help him work with new partners/sponsors or those he has already teamed up with. There´s no guarantee but you will never find out if you´re not trying.
The second part of the task was to estimate the costs the player has to calculate in order to step up his IGTV game. Not an easy part, as there are a lot of things to keep in mind. On the one hand, I have to cover my expenses as a content creator to make a living from it this month. On the other hand, this could be the start of a long-term collaboration. The hardest question is how to set prices so that everyone involved benefits on the short as well on the long term. What I did was look at my daily rates compared to suggestions I´ve found on the internet. I´m still not sure if I´m right with the rates but only time will tell and probably Coach Ripke will comment on that.
This kind of work is pretty intimate so what I like to do is offer clients a pilot in order to get in touch, get to know each other, and figure out how it functions to work together. For this pilot project, I ask the clients to just cover my expenses.
A lot of text and no photos this time so let´s see what the next task will bring. As always I´m excited to see how you approached this task or how your thoughts on the topic are. Feel free to share them with me via comment, mail or direct message on Instagram.
